De Muy

De Muy is a young dune area on Texel where saltwater influence has disappeared, shaped by human intervention. Unlike nearby De Slufter, a small dike was built here to reclaim part of the beach, creating a distinct landscape. Over time, new dunes and the freshwater Muyplas lake formed, resulting in striking steep slopes and a central valley with meadows and a pine forest called the Oorlogsschip.

This nature reserve is known for its spoonbill colony and rare vegetation, including several orchid species. Visitors can explore marked walking trails, some open year-round, while others are accessible only outside the breeding season. A 4 km route leads to the Bertusnol viewpoint via a steep staircase for panoramic views. Staatsbosbeheer also organises guided excursions—check their activity agenda for dates. A pair of binoculars is useful for spotting herons, bluethroats, and wildflowers. From De Muy, you can continue on foot to De Slufter. For details, visit the National Park’s website.
