De Slufter

De Slufter is a unique coastal nature reserve on Texel where the land remains openly connected to the North Sea. After failed attempts to reclaim it as farmland, the tidal inlet now forms a dynamic landscape of creeks that flood after storms. Salt-tolerant plants like sea purslane, glasswort, and sea wormwood thrive here, turning the area purple in summer. The southern section offers public access, with walking trails including the family-friendly Familiepad and the 2 km Slufter Speurtocht for children. A wheelchair-accessible viewpoint near the Sluftertrap provides views of the salt marsh, while the path to the beach is also accessible for wheelchairs and mobility scooters. Birdwatchers can spot eider ducks, shelducks, and avocets, while the Slufter channel shelters crabs, shrimp, and flatfish. Waterproof footwear is recommended, as trails often flood.
